High-protein Tesco meal deal: how to pick 40 g or more
How to build a high-protein Tesco meal deal: which mains, snacks and drinks to pick, how to read protein per pack, and combos that reach 40 g or more.

You've trained in the morning, it's lunchtime, and the nearest food is a Tesco Express. You can get 40 g of protein or more from one meal deal if you pick all three parts for protein: a chicken, egg or tuna main, a protein snack such as an egg or chicken pot, and a milk-based protein drink instead of a fizzy one. Check the protein per pack on each label, not per 100 g.
In short
- Pick the main first. Chicken, egg and tuna sandwiches, wraps and salads usually have the most protein.
- Use the snack and the drink for protein too. That's where most people lose 20 to 30 g.
- Read protein per pack on the front or back label, and add up the three.
1. How does the Tesco meal deal work?
You choose a main, a snack and a drink from the meal deal range for one price.
When Which? reported the last price rise, in August 2025, the standard deal went up to £3.85 with a Clubcard and £4.25 without, with a premium deal at £5.50 with a Clubcard and £6 without. Prices and ranges change, so check the shelf in your store.
Not every item in a store is in the deal. Look for the meal deal tag on the shelf edge.
2. How much protein should a lunch have?
For most active people, 25 to 40 g at a meal is a sensible target.
The British Nutrition Foundation (BNF) says UK guidance for adults is 0.75 g of protein per kg of body weight a day, and quotes sports bodies' figures of 1.2 to 2.0 g per kg for athletes in hard training. It also says about 20 to 25 g of high-quality protein after exercise seems enough to get the most from a session.
So if you're training seriously and eat three or four times a day, a meal deal lunch of 40 g pulls its weight. See how much protein you need for your own figure.
3. How do I read protein on the label?
Look for protein per pack, not per 100 g.
UK labels show nutrition per 100 g, and often per portion or per pack too. The NHS explains that per 100 g is best for comparing products, but it's the per-pack figure you actually eat when you finish a sandwich.
A quick way to compare two mains, from us: divide the protein per pack by the calories per pack. A sandwich with 30 g of protein and 400 kcal is a better pick for protein than one with 20 g and 550 kcal.
4. Which meal deal mains are best for protein?
These kinds of main usually have the most protein. Check each pack, because recipes change.
- Chicken sandwiches and wraps, especially chicken with bacon, or plain chicken salad. Often the highest.
- Egg-based sandwiches, such as egg and bacon.
- Tuna sandwiches and wraps.
- Protein pasta pots and salads with chicken, which often say "high protein" on the front.
- Sushi with salmon or chicken is usually lower in protein than a chicken sandwich.
Mains that are mostly bread, cheese or veg, such as cheese and pickle, tend to be lower. Meat-free mains vary a lot; some falafel and bean options are decent, others aren't.
5. Which snacks and drinks add the most protein?
This is where a meal deal goes from 25 g to 45 g.
Snacks:
- Egg pots and chicken pots
- Protein yoghurts or high-protein dairy pots
- Edamame or bean snack pots
- Nuts (lower protein per pack, but better than crisps)
Drinks:
- Milk-based protein shakes or high-protein milk drinks, often 20 g or more per bottle
- Ordinary milk or milkshakes, a few grams more than water or fizzy drinks
A packet of crisps and a can of pop add almost no protein. Swap both, and you've usually added 20 to 30 g.
6. What do good high-protein combos look like?
Here's how to build one. The numbers are typical ranges, not specific products. Check the labels.
| Part | Good pick | Protein, typical range |
|---|---|---|
| Main | Chicken sandwich or wrap | 20 to 35 g |
| Snack | Egg or chicken pot | 8 to 15 g |
| Drink | Protein shake or protein milk drink | 15 to 25 g |
| Total | about 45 to 75 g |
Even the low end beats a typical cheese sandwich, crisps and a fizzy drink by a long way.
7. What about calories and salt?
Some high-protein mains are also high in fat and salt. Bacon and mayo add up quickly.
The NHS traffic-light labels help: more greens and ambers is generally better. If you're counting calories, see how to count calories without paying for an app.
Meal deals are handy, not perfect. Having one most weekdays is fine for most people, but make your other meals include fruit, vegetables and wholegrains, as the NHS Eatwell Guide suggests.
8. Is there anything outside the deal worth knowing?
Tesco also sells high-protein ready meals and mix-and-match lunches outside the meal deal. For example, its High Protein Chicken Shawarma lists 37.7 g of protein per 400 g pack. They're not always cheaper, but they're another option if the meal deal shelf is picked clean.
